Scottish Premiership Delivers Thrilling Opening Weekend

Alexey Andrianov 5 min read 279 15 Feb 2026

The 2026/27 Scottish Premiership season burst into life with an action-packed opening matchday that produced 18 goals across six enthralling encounters. From cagey draws to high-scoring thrillers, Scotland's top flight served notice that drama would be the order of the campaign ahead.

Dundee United and Rangers played out a tense 1-1 stalemate at Tannadice, while Celtic narrowly overcame Dundee 1-0 in a closely contested Old Firm derby warm-up. St Mirren made a statement with a commanding 2-0 victory over newly-promoted Falkirk, and Aberdeen secured a valuable 2-1 home win against Heart of Midlothian. Motherwell claimed all three points in a 1-2 triumph over Hibernian, and St Johnstone edged Kilmarnock 4-3 in the round's highest-scoring encounter.

With every team in action and goals flowing freely, the opening weekend offered intriguing glimpses into early season form and ambitions across the league.

Premiership Prediction Card: Matchday 1 Falls Short of the Mark

The opening matchday of the 2026/27 Scottish Premiership campaign proved a challenging affair for our predictions, with the 1X2 selection rate landing at just 33 percent across the six fixtures. Of the six ties contested, only two results aligned with our pre-match forecasting, leaving considerable room for reflection as the season unfolds. The numbers paint a picture of a difficult weekend at the selections desk, where upsets and surprise outcomes caught our projections off guard.

The standout success came from two familiar Premiership heavyweights. St Johnstone claimed all three points in a high-scoring encounter with Kilmarnock, our sole correct away selection materialising in a 4-3 victory that delivered goals at both ends. Celtic similarly justified our faith in them, securing a narrow 1-0 victory over Dundee to make it two from two on the correct predictions column. However, the remaining four fixtures all deviated from our projections, with Dundee United holding Rangers to a share of the spoils standing as the most costly miss of the evening.

The 33 percent accuracy on both 1X2 and Over/Under markets indicates our Over/Under predictions struggled alongside the match-result selections, though the BTTS figure of 67 percent offers a more encouraging metric. Three of the six matches did feature goals at both ends, suggesting the goal-scoring dynamics were somewhat easier to read than the outright outcomes. As the season progresses, these opening-day lessons will need careful study, with the prediction models requiring recalibration ahead of Matchday 2.

Scottish Premiership Matchday 1 Produces Upsets and High-Scoring Drama

The opening weekend of the 2026/27 Scottish Premiership season delivered unexpected results, with three of four predicted outcomes proving incorrect. The sole correct prediction came from McDiarmid Park, where St Johnstone claimed a dramatic 4-3 victory over Kilmarnock despite the home side being considered only 43 percent likely to win. The match showcased the attacking intent both teams brought to their season opener, with seven goals shared between them in what proved to be the highest-scoring fixture of the day.

Away teams enjoyed particular success across the card, with Motherwell securing a 2-1 victory at Hibernian despite being assigned just 44 percent winning probability. The result at Easter Road represented a significant upset, as Hibernian had been installed as the predicted winners. Motherwell's triumph suggested they arrived in Edinburgh with clear tactical purpose and execution, converting their underdog status into three valuable points on the road.

Aberdeen also defied the odds at Pittodrie Stadium, defeating Heart of Midlothian 2-1. The 42 percent prediction in favour of the visitors proved wide of the mark as Aberdeen claimed all three points in their first home fixture of the campaign. This result immediately establishes Aberdeen as a side capable of competing strongly at home, while Hearts will need to regroup quickly after an opening-day defeat.

Falkirk's return to the top flight ended in disappointment as they suffered a 2-0 defeat at home to St Mirren. Despite Falkirk being backed by a 48 percent probability, St Mirren proved too strong and claimed a comfortable away victory. The result leaves Falkirk with work to do as they adjust to Premiership level, while St Mirren will take considerable confidence from an opening-day clean sheet and three points on the road.

Scottish Premiership Matchday 1: Early Standings Emerge After Opening Fixtures

The opening round of the 2026/27 Scottish Premiership season has produced an intriguing early standings picture, with Celtic and St Mirren establishing themselves as the pace-setters through two victories each. Both clubs have collected the maximum six points available, winning both of their opening encounters without dropping a single point. Their perfect starts give them a two-point cushion over the rest of the field as the campaign begins to take shape.

Motherwell occupies third position with four points, having accumulated one win and one draw from their opening fixtures. The Steelmen's unbeaten record places them firmly in the early chasing pack, though they will need to maintain consistency to keep pace with the two clubs leading the way. Behind them, a closely packed cluster of three teams—Heart of Midlothian, Dundee, and St Johnstone—each sit on three points following single victories in their respective matches. These clubs find themselves separated only by goal difference, with everything still to play for in the weeks ahead.

With only the opening round complete, the standings remain fluid and subject to significant change as teams continue their campaigns. The early advantage established by Celtic and St Mirren could prove valuable, but the tight margins throughout the rest of the table suggest competition for higher positions will intensify quickly. Clubs currently outside the leading positions will look to accumulate points across upcoming fixtures, while those at the summit aim to preserve their winning momentum and extend their leads.
