Eredivisie Matchday 12: Goals Flow as Control Slips Away
Matchday 12 delivered an emphatic reminder that the Eredivisie rarely settles into a predictable rhythm. Nine matches produced 42 goals, with several clashes carrying genuine unpredictability from the opening exchanges to the final whistle. Willem II and PEC Zwolle shared a 1-1 draw, while Fortuna Sittard and Telstar twice found the net in a 2-2 encounter. Twente’s clash with Ajax also ended level at 2-2, leaving entertainment value in abundance even where a winner failed to emerge.
The round’s defining feature was its contrasting swings. ADO Den Haag secured a convincing 3-1 victory over Sparta Rotterdam, while Excelsior fell 1-0 to GO Ahead Eagles. The sharpest attacking display came in Heerenveen’s 5-3 win over Feyenoord, a result that underlined how quickly momentum can change when both teams commit to forward play. There was another emphatic result at Cambuur, where PSV Eindhoven ran out 5-2 winners.
AZ Alkmaar and Groningen supplied another major contest, with the hosts surviving a 4-3 scoreline to claim the points. NEC Nijmegen also edged Utrecht 3-2. Across the round, frequent goals and narrow margins created a compelling mix of close finishes, heavy defeats and dramatic swings, ensuring Matchday 12 delivered both excitement and a varied set of outcomes.
Matchday 12 Prediction Scorecard: Strong Goal Markets, Mixed 1X2 Record
Our Matchday 12 predictions produced a mixed 1X2 return of 4/9 correct (44%). The successful calls were ADO Den Haag, Excelsior, Cambuur and AZ Alkmaar. ADO Den Haag’s 3-1 win over Sparta Rotterdam was a successful home selection, while Excelsior’s 0-1 defeat to GO Ahead Eagles produced the right away outcome. Cambuur’s 2-5 loss to PSV Eindhoven and AZ Alkmaar’s 4-3 victory over Groningen also matched our 1X2 predictions, despite both matches featuring high-scoring scorelines. By contrast, the draw selections for Willem II against PEC Zwolle and Fortuna Sittard against Telstar landed, as both matches finished 1-1 and 2-2 respectively. The away call for Heerenveen against Feyenoord was also wrong despite the 5-3 scoreline, the home selection for Twente against Ajax missed after a 2-2 draw, and the home call for Utrecht against NEC Nijmegen was incorrect in a 2-3 contest.
The contrast between the main result market and the goal-based markets was striking. Our Over/Under accuracy finished at 78%, while BTTS reached 89%. That performance suggests our attacking and scoring expectations were more dependable than the 1X2 selections. The listed results contained several demanding goal environments, including Heerenveen 5-3 Feyenoord, Cambuur 2-5 PSV Eindhoven, AZ Alkmaar 4-3 Groningen and Utrecht 2-3 NEC Nijmegen. Such scorelines rewarded teams that successfully found the net, but they also increased the scope for a 1X2 prediction to be wrong: even when one side reaches a larger number of goals, the opposing side can remain within one goal or equalise at a crucial stage. The 44% 1X2 record therefore reflects close calls rather than a complete failure to identify the right attacking side.
Several misses also came in matches where the draw was difficult to separate from a result. Willem II 1-1 PEC Zwolle, Fortuna Sittard 2-2 Telstar, Twente 2-2 Ajax and Utrecht 2-3 NEC Nijmegen all produced shared scoring or narrow margins. Heerenveen 5-3 Feyenoord was the exception among the unsuccessful selections, since its four-goal margin produced a clear difference between the teams but did not validate our predicted away result. Overall, the scorecard rewards the reliability of the Over/Under and BTTS approach, while the 4/9 1X2 return shows that the strongest scoring forecasts did not always translate into the correct match result.
Matchday 12 delivers four high-scoring Eredivisie shocks
Matchday 12 produced a notably dramatic set of Eredivisie results, with every listed match decided by a margin of one goal. Heerenveen’s 5-3 victory over Feyenoord supplied the standout attacking spectacle and overturned the 2-goal prediction, which carried a 56% probability. The result confirms that Heerenveen and Feyenoord were involved in an open contest, although the scoreline alone does not identify which side controlled key moments of the match.
AZ Alkmaar also edged Groningen 4-3 in another closely fought contest. The original 1-goal prediction was rated at a 64% probability and was ultimately recorded as correct, despite the seven-goal match ultimately producing a wider separation than the forecast had suggested. Both AZ Alkmaar and Groningen contributed to a result defined by a substantial attacking return and a narrow margin of victory.
Cambuur’s 2-5 defeat to PSV Eindhoven delivered the round’s clearest home reversal. PSV Eindhoven won by three goals after Cambuur scored twice, while the pre-match 2-goal prediction was given a 67% probability and proved correct. The 5-2 scoreline stands as the largest winning margin among the four results, with PSV Eindhoven recording a convincing away performance and Cambuur left to reflect a significant gap between the two sides.
Utrecht came out on top against NEC Nijmegen by a single goal, winning 3-2. The forecast had predicted a 1-goal margin with a 41% probability, so the narrow outcome was right even though the 3-2 score added two more goals than the projected result. Alongside Heerenveen’s 5-3 win over Feyenoord and AZ Alkmaar’s 4-3 victory over Groningen, the Utrecht result underlined how tightly matched the round’s action was.
PSV retain a narrow lead after Matchday 12
The updated Eredivisie standings show PSV Eindhoven still at the top with 26 points from 12 matches. Their record of eight wins, two draws and two defeats gives them a strong advantage at the summit, although Feyenoord and Ajax are only one point behind with 25 points apiece. Twente sit fourth on 24 points, two points adrift of PSV, while AZ Alkmaar are a further point back in fifth on 23. Heerenveen complete the leading group in sixth place with 21 points. The closeness of the positions means that a single round could still have a significant effect on the order at the top.
PSV’s advantage is built on the greatest number of wins in the table, with eight compared with seven for Feyenoord, Ajax and Twente, and seven for AZ Alkmaar. Feyenoord and Ajax have also recorded only one defeat each, matching the best defensive record in terms of losses among the six teams listed, while their four draws show that consistency rather than an unbroken run of victories has carried them this far. Twente have won seven matches and drawn three, leaving them just two points behind the leaders with two defeats to their name. AZ Alkmaar share the same number of wins as Twente but have one fewer draw and one additional defeat, explaining their one-point gap. Heerenveen remain five points behind PSV but are only three points adrift of fifth place.
Looking ahead, the principal pressure is concentrated at the top, where PSV, Feyenoord and Ajax are separated by a single point, with Twente equally close behind. That compact group provides no room for a significant slide: any dropped points could alter the order, while another positive result could extend the gap. The lower positions are similarly compressed, with AZ Alkmaar and Heerenveen separated by two points and both within touching distance of Twente. Since the season remains in progress, the immediate challenge for every side in this group is to protect its position before the table develops further.
